Nokia launches multimode radio card
Nokia Corp. has introduced a multimode radio card that will allow user to access GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks and wireless LANs using their laptops and handheld devices.
Unveiled at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, the D211 card gives "always on" Internet access within GPRS, HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) and wireless LAN coverage areas, the company said in a statement. It is also compatible with some GPRS and wireless LAN-based Virtual Private Networks, Nokia said.
The card operates in devices using Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, XP, Windows CE 3.0 and Linux operating systems, and needs a type II or III PC card slot and a sufficient power supply, Nokia said.
Data transmission rates are up to 40.2K bits per second (bps) over GPRS, 43.2K bps using HSCSD and 11M bps on a wireless LAN network, the statement said. The card's network interface is IEEE802.11b WiFi compliant, Nokia said
The 52 gram, 125 millimeter long D211 card will be available in the second quarter of this year, Nokia said.
