Nortel tapped to build $1.5 billion C&W VoIP net
Nortel Networks has been awarded a 10-year, $1.4 billion contract by Cable & Wireless to implement a global voice over IP network.
The pact gives Nortel's flagging fortunes in carrier-class IP a much needed boost after the company canceled its Versalar 25000 Internet core router and has seen its presence in IP diminish since acquiring Bay Networks 2 years ago (NWFusion, http://www.nwfusion.com/news/ 2000/0724nortbay.html).
Nortel will manage the build out and operation of the C&W voice over IP network through its Global Professional Services group. It also will be the largest implementation to date of Nortel's Succession voice over IP product line, and will include deployment of the Succession Communication Server 2000, Succession Communication Server 3000 softswitch and Nortel's Passport 15000 Packet Voice Gateway.
The C&W network will extend throughout Europe and North America. Voice traffic will be migrated onto the new network over a 3-year period. C&W also is expected to transfer employees managing its existing voice network to Nortel.
Succession products are currently being tested or used by Telstra, BT Spain, France Telecom, Global Village Telecom, AT&T and SBC.
